Heart health: warning signs, including ones women often miss

Chest pressure, tightness or pain that spreads to the arm, jaw, neck or back is the classic sign of a heart attack. It may come with sweating, nausea and breathlessness.

Women, older people and people with diabetes are more likely to have less typical signs, such as unusual tiredness, breathlessness, nausea, upper back or jaw pain, or a vague discomfort. Do not dismiss them as gas or stress.

If you suspect a heart attack, call an ambulance (108 or 112) immediately. Do not drive yourself, and do not wait to see whether it passes. Every minute counts.

You can lower your risk by not smoking or chewing tobacco, controlling blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol, being active for about 30 minutes most days, eating less fried and processed food, and managing stress and sleep. Get your blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol checked regularly after age 30, earlier if heart disease runs in your family.
