How to spot fake box-office numbers: a reader’s guide

Box-office figures are often exaggerated, so treat them with care.

Look for official posts from the producers or distributors, and note whether the number is gross (before taxes and theatre share) or net, and whether it is worldwide, India or just one state. Be suspicious of round numbers announced within hours of release, of numbers with no source and of figures that jump a lot between reports.

Fans and paid promotions can inflate numbers on social media. A film's staying power in the second week tells you more than a big opening claim.

We will publish a collection figure only when it comes from the producers or a reliable trade source, and we will say which one.
