Breast cancer does not always begin with a lump

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A lump is the best-known sign, but not the only one. Doctors also advise watching for a change in breast size or shape, dimpled or thickened skin, a newly inverted nipple, unusual nipple discharge, redness, or swelling in the armpit.

Most breast changes are not cancer, but a new change that lasts more than a couple of weeks should be seen by a doctor. Screening such as mammography, as advised for your age and risk, can find cancer before symptoms appear.

General information, not medical advice. Please consult a doctor.
